Giving Back to Nick

Nicholas Chan just finished finals in his third semester of college, and he’s already looking forward to the year to come. His inspirations? Golf – and his family.

Ever since the day his father, Bro. Garrett Chan, brought him to a greenway, he’s been hooked. He works at a golf store, and spends all the time he can on weekends and breaks learning more about the sport and perfecting his swing. Once he completes his business degree, he hopes to make a living from this passion, in a sales or marketing position with one of his favorite brands.

Of course, golf wasn’t the only lesson Nick learned from his family. He was also inspired to follow in the footsteps of his father, uncles, and brother to join the Masonic youth order of DeMolay, where he gained new confidence and a solid foundation of Masonic values. “I was always a shy kid,” Chan recalls. “DeMolay helped me to really find myself. It showed me what was possible.”

Nick quickly rose to officer status

and this year will be honored with the Degree of Chevalier, the highest honor an active DeMolay can receive, praising above-and-beyond service. Nick’s devotion was also recognized by the Masons of California at this past year’s Annual Communication. Along with 22 other youth leaders, he received the fraternity’s new Masonic Youth Leadership Scholarship – a scholarship to help our Masonic youth leaders achieve the academic goals they often sacrifice while serving their youth orders.

“I truly am grateful for the scholarship, and for everything the Masons have done for the youth, myself, and my family,” Nick says. “They’ve helped more than we could ever imagine.”
